Abstract
This project aims to develop good practices in the building industry by dealing with the integrated design of the architectural envelope and the technological systems. This enables the building designers to maximize the energy performance of the building and the well-being of its occupants, while minimizing the emission of noxious and climate-altering gases through both passive and active means operated by smart technologies. The updated Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD, 2018/844/EU), introduces the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) to measure the ability of a building to optimize the management of all the technological systems by intelligent and interoperable services. Two real case studies will be considered to be evaluated and possibly retrofitted or redesigned in the light of improving their SRI: the first is an existing portion of a building and the second is an already designed building equipped with an “as designed" digital twin. A first SRI evaluation will enable us to plan technically and economically feasible interventions of the two buildings to increase their intelligence. This will make available a measure of the improvements obtainable before implementing the new works. The new SRI ranking after the provided interventions will give us an objective measure of the project’s success as well as an index to evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions and the procedures followed to select and implement them. The results will be beneficial for both the commercial/industrial and research partners and will foster innovation in traditional building market. The whole project will be based on a thorough study of the SRI and the criteria that drive its computation. With the help of a selected group of experts and other stakeholders, a multicriteria evaluation process will be implemented to analyze critically the catalogs of technological services adopted so far by the European Commission as well as the weighting factors adopted to evaluate their impacts on the SRI. When the planned interventions will have been realized, a performance monitoring campaign will start, with the aim to refine the functionalities of the upgraded systems in the light of the SRI criteria. The result will both demonstrate the efficacy of technology addition through real examples and provide really innovative know-how to the project partners. After the project conclusion, the two case-study buildings will become a concrete example of the positive effects of convenient and easy-to-use ICT technologies on energy performance and flexibility of buildings, on the health and well-being of their occupants.
